Achilles
tendonitis is a painful and often debilitating inflammation or injury
of the Achilles tendon. This large tendon is an extension of the
two calf muscles; it runs down the back of the lower leg and attaches
to the heel bone (calcaneus). The Achilles tendon connects the strong
leg muscles to the foot and gives us the ability to rise up on our
toes, facilitating the act of walking. The Achilles tendon is vital
to our ability to walk upright and Achilles tendonitis can make
walking almost impossible.
Plantar
fasciitis pain is severe and can cause loss of time from work sometimes
leading to total and/or partial disability. Since there have been
limited options to the patient who suffers chronic Achilles tendonitis,
ESWT gives new hope. ESWT eliminates the risk factors associated
with surgery and lets the patient resume a normal life.
Signs
and symptoms that your pain may be Achilles Tendonitis:
- First
steps in the morning are very painful along the back of the heel
- First
steps after rest or sitting are very painful along the back of
the heel
- Pain
can subside and then return after rest or athletic activities
- Common
in athletes and runners who experienced pain but ran "through
it."
- Pain
can be a persistent ache, a shooting pain, a burning pain, or
even severe piercing pain.
- There
is also what we refer to as “trigger point” pain.
Meaning the patient will have pain if the doctor presses at the
site where the tendon meets the heel bone.
